Prebiotic Fiber and Leeks
Good Diet 101 tells us that a diet high in fiber will keep you fuller longer and help you fight fat. But what is Prebiotic Fiber? Basically, it is a super fat fighter. According to an article in Mens Health Magazine, prebiotics help promote the proliferation of good bacteria in your digestive tract, which in turn keeps your digestive system healthy and keeps things moving!
So how can you pack more of this super fat fighting fiber into your diet? By eating various foods that contain a type of prebiotic fiber called fructan. Men's Health says in order to maintain good "gut health" to eat 8-10 grams of prebiotic fiber a day. Below is a list of foods high in prebiotic fiber.
HA, just kidding. I did set out to make some soup though. I was getting over a killer cold, so I made some Chicken Soup to help get over that hump between "feeling like crud" and "having an actual fever." I always start my soups by sautéing onions in a little olive oil, salt and pepper to give the broth some flavor. So this time, I decided to use leeks instead! Since they are a member of the onion family :). Turned out great and I felt better about getting my daily dose of Prebiotic Fiber ;). Next experiment: Asparagus!
